What are Harakat? A Simple Guide to Arabic Vowels for Parents

The Arabi App Team

If you are just starting to learn Arabic alongside your child, you might have noticed something strange about the alphabet: it doesn't really have vowels!

Instead, Arabic uses a system of tiny symbols placed above or below the letters to tell you how to pronounce them. These symbols are called Harakat (الحركات).

Understanding Harakat is the key to unlocking the Arabic language, and it is much easier than it looks. Here is a simple guide to help you explain it to your child.

The Big Three: Fatha, Kasra, and Damma

There are three main short vowels in Arabic. If you can master these, you are 90% of the way there.

1. Fatha (فَتْحَة)

2. Kasra (كَسْرَة)

3. Damma (ضَمَّة)

How to Teach Harakat to Kids

The best way to teach Harakat to toddlers is to use physical actions!

By connecting the sound to a physical movement, their brain memorizes it instantly.

Need a Fun Way to Practice?

The Arabi App features a dedicated interactive module just for Harakat! Your child can physically drag and drop the vowels onto the letters and hear a crystal-clear native speaker pronounce the result. It is the fastest way to build phonetic awareness.
